Eight Tibetan students have been sentenced to varying prison terms for “illegally holding demonstration” last year by the Chabcha (Ch: Gonghe) County People’s Court in Chabcha County in Tsolho (Ch: Hainan) Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province, according to a report published today on the official “China’s Tibet website”. According to the report, the county court passed the judgement on 10 April 2013 at around 10 am (local time), sentencing eight Tibetan youths from Tsolho Vocational School in Chabcha County for holding demonstration on 26 November 2012. They were charged of “causing harm to social stability”.

Tibetan students in Machu County, Kanlho “Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture” (‘TAP’) in Gansu Province have staged a peaceful protest on 3 April 2010 against the Chinese government sacking their school heads, according to information received by the Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD) from reliable sources.

The students of Machu Tibetan Nationality Middle School, in Machu County, Kanlho “TAP”, Gansu Province, led by senior students staged a peaceful protest in the afternoon of 3 April 2010. According to the source, the students were infuriated by Chinese authorities’ firing of the school’s headmaster, Kyabchen Dedrol and two of his Tibetan assistants; Do Re and Choekyong Tseten from their job last month following a pro-independence protest by students of the school in mid March this year and this had led to their latest protest. The Tibetan nationality Middle school reportedly comprises about 1,500 students.

A group of Tibetan school students staged a demonstration around 8 a.m. today morning in Labrang (Ch: Xiahe) County, Gannan “Tibet Autonomous Prefecture”, Gansu Province, according to reliable information received by the Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD).

The students started off the demonstration from their school, Xiahe Tibetan Middle School, and headed towards the county market area raising slogans. Reportedly the local Public Security Bureau (PSB) stopped the students in the outskirts of the main market area. According to sources on the ground, the students were driven back to the school and a strong contingent of Public Security Bureau Personnels and People’s Armed Police have surrounded the school barring anyone to go in or come out. The parents of the students have been summoned at the school. The students reportedly demonstrated against the authorities false practice of granting reserved seats for higher education meant for the Tibetan students to the Chinese students. The TCHRD will continue to monitor the situation and will issue updates as further details become available.
