Five monks have gone missing since the raid by Chinese security officials on Ramoche Temple following protests in the Tibetan capital, Lhasa, in March 2008.

According to information received by TCHRD, the whereabouts of Ramoche monastery’s Chagzoe (manager and treasurer) Sonam Rabgyal and four other monks cannot be ascertained. The monks were arrested during a midnight raid in monks’ residence on 7 April 2008.

Four Tibetan youth in Nangchen County in north eastern Qinghai Province were arrested on 26 July 2008 by the Chinese Public Security Bureau (PSB) officials for protesting against the Summer Festival planned by the Chinese government to greet the upcoming Beijing Olympic Games, according to confirmed information received by the Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD).

According to sources, the Chinese authorities of Nangchen County, Jyekundo (Ch: Yushu) “Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture” (‘TAP’) in Qinghai Province, have ordered all the township and villages authorities under it’s administration to prepare and bring out a festive spectacle/performance during the planned summer festival in Drokshog Township, Nangchen County, to greet the upcoming 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. The planned five days Summer Festival with song and dance, and custom competition among villages at Drokshog Township in Nangchen County was officially announced about two months ago ordering compulsory participation from each family with rehearsal date set on 25 July 2008. It was confirmed that lyrics of songs prepared by each and every villages were thoroughly scrutinised by the authorities to ensure that no songs contain lyric latent with bereavement message of separation or message in praise of the exiled Dalai Lama or Gyalwa Karmapa. The people were known to have shown great displeasure over stern enforcement by the Chinese authorities.

A group of local Tibetans were severely beaten and then detained by the Chinese security forces for staging peaceful demonstrations in Kardze County, Kardze “Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture” (“TAP”), Sichuan, according to confirmed information received by the Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD)

On 21 June 2008, a Tibetan youth named Dragu of Khashul Village, Dado Township, Kardze County, Kardze “TAP”, was detained by the People’s Armed Police (PAP) as he had entered into the main market of the County calling for a free Tibet until his protest was overtaken by 7 local PAP officers. He was seen sporting a white band tied around his head with the words “Bod Rangzen” (Free Tibet) written on it and with Tibetan flags painted on both of his cheeks.

This morning at around 11:00 AM (Beijing Standard Time), at least three Tibetans were severely beaten and detained by the Chinese security forces for staging a peaceful protest in Kardze County, Kardze “Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture” (‘TAP’) Sichuan Province, according to confirmed information received by the Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD).

According to sources, this morning at around 11:00 AM (BST), a peaceful protest was staged by a few Tibetan residents of Kardze County, at one of the road intersections at the Kardze county main market square, raising Pro-Tibet slogans and distributing pamphlets calling for “the swift return of the Dalai Lama to Tibet”, “freedom in Tibet”, “release of those arrested in recent protests” and “China quit Tibet” etc.

After days of the peaceful protests in Lhasa and in other parts of Tibet, the Chinese authorities are now arresting hundreds of Tibetans in other parts of Tibet.

On 19 March 2008, Lhasa City Procuratorate has arrested 24 Tibetan protestors on a basis of pre-trial detention. Although 24 Tibetan protestors are on pre-trial detention but it is already a foregone conclusion that they will be charged with serious crimes and will receive harsh prison sentences.

In China pre-trial arrests are usual practice, it is most likely that the detained Tibetan protestors will be indicted within five days at an extraordinary pace compared judicial system in the democratic countries. The swift arrests and sentencing is part of Chinese legal system of sending fear and panic to the protestors to cease their activities. It can well be described as “killing goats to scare sheep”.

The Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD) received confirmed information from reliable sources that three more Tibetans were arrested from Yonru Kharshul Village, Ponkar Township, Lithang County in connection with Ronggye A’drak’s case following continued mass protest by his supporters.

In the aftermath of Ronggye A’drak’s arrest, severe restrictions were imposed in Lithang and surrounding areas for the fear of massive popular uprising. Supporters of Ronggye A’drak are known to have stationed outside the County Public Security Bureau (PSB) Office for weeks after his arrest on 1 August 2007 demanding his early release. In an attempt to intimidate the supporters of Ronggye A’drak, the Lithang County government sent additional contingents of People’s Armed Police (PAP) as a reinforcement to monitor and restrict the activities of his supporters.
