China: Release Tibetan monks from incommunicado detention

Early this month, two Tibetan monks were arbitrarily arrested for carrying out lone protests on different dates in Ngaba County in Ngaba (Ch: Aba) Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province. TCHRD submits civil society recommendations on gender equality and women’s empowerment to Central Tibetan Administration

On 6 August, the Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD) submitted a set of recommendations on gender equality and women’s empowerment to the Central Tibetan Administration’s Women’s Empowerment Desk and the Kashag Secretariat/Cabinet Secretariat as well as to the secretariat of Tibetan Parliament-in-exile.

The recommendations were compiled from a civil society consultation conducted by TCHRD. The consultation was part of a three-day workshop on the rights-based approach to gender equality and women’s empowerment organised by TCHRD from 25 to 27 June 2018. A total of 30 female participants reviewed the revised Tibetan Women’s Empowerment Policy (‘policy’) and made recommendations on how the policy can better serve Tibetan women. Among the participants were students, teachers, farmers, nuns, entrepreneurs, tour guides, human rights researchers, members of regional chapters of Tibetan Women’s Association, and a trainer on gender sensitisation and gender equality.

UN Committee on racial discrimination concerned about human rights situation of Tibetans

The Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD) welcomes the review of People’s Republic of China (PRC) by the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (‘Committee’) that took place on 10 and 13 August in Geneva. The Committee subsequently released the findings of the review known as ‘concluding observations’ on 30 August.

Two Tibetans convicted for ‘inciting separatism’ released after serving long prison terms

Two Tibetan political prisoners were released earlier this month after the completion of their prison terms. Detailed information on their health condition could not be obtained immediately due to restrictions on communication in Tibet.

UN Committee seeks additional information from China on racial discrimination

The UN body working towards the elimination of racial discrimination worldwide has asked for additional information from the government of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), according to a document dated 13 June 2018.

The UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (‘Committee’) that monitors implementation of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (‘Convention’) conveyed a set of questions (‘List of Themes’) to the PRC after reviewing the PRC’s national report to the 96th session of the body. The PRC delegation will appear before the Committee on 10 and 13 August 2018 with the meeting being webcast live by the UN. The Committee is composed of 18 Experts as members including Ms. Li Yanduan, the current Ambassador of China to the Independent State of Samoa.

TCHRD organizes workshop on rights-based approach to gender equality and women’s empowerment

The Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD) in association with Jagori Grameen organised a three-day workshop on the ‘Rights-based Approach to Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment’ from 25 to 27 June 2018 at the premises of Jagori Grameen in Sidhbari near Dharamsala. A total of 30 participants including students, teachers, farmers, nuns, entrepreneurs, tour guides, human rights researchers, members of regional chapters of Tibetan Women’s Association and a trainer on gender sensitisation and gender equality travelled from different parts of India and Nepal to attend the workshop.
