Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD) condemns in strongest terms the framing of Tulku Phurbu Tsering Rinpoche on weapon charges related to last year’s peaceful protests in Kardze (Ch: Ganzi). This is the first known case of senior Buddhist leader being tried in court with a serious charge linked to last year’s demonstration.

A highly revered religious figure of Kardze, Phurbu Tsering Rinpoche, 52, who headed Pangri and Ya-tseg Nunneries in Kardze was accused of ‘illegally possessing weapons’, his Beijing based lawyer Li Fangping was quoted as saying to the Associated Press (AP) in a telephone interview on Tuesday. Rinpoche could face imprisonment for up to 15 years if found guilty by the Kardze Prefecture Intermediate People’s Court.

Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD) received confirmed information from multiple sources that three more Tibetans from Kardze region were again arrested by Chinese authorities on 21 March 2009, under the on-going farming boycott movement in the Tibetan region of Kardze in Sichuan Province.

Dhunka Dorjee, age 40, Tsering Wangrak, age 40 and Pachen, age 30, all from Khang-Nyin-Nang Village, Lhoe-pa Township, Kardze County, Kardze “Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture” (“TAP”), Sichuan Province, were arrested by Kardze County Public Security Bureau (PSB) forces on alleged charges for their involvement in the farming boycott movement. Sources also told TCHRD that, an unidentified Tibetan fled towards mountain nearby when PSB forces came to arrest him. Earlier on 19 March 2009, a 27-year-old Jampa Dhondup, a monk of Tse-Tsang Monastery was arrested over his involvement in the same farming boycott movement.

The Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD) received a confirmed information from reliable sources that local Tibetans in Kardze County refused to celebrate Losar, the Tibetan New Year (February 25-28, 2009) despite exhortation by the local Chinese authorities. The refusal to celebrate the Tibetan New Year was observed in the memory of those Tibetans died in the largest Pan Tibet protests in 2008.

Sources told TCHRD that about 20 days prior to the Tibetan New Year, which fell on 25 February 2009, Tibetans in Kardze County held meritorious religious prayers such as reciting Mani and Tara mantras as a gesture of sincere grief and mourning for those Tibetans who gave up their lives for human rights, freedom and justice in Tibet. In most parts of Tibet, the Tibetan New Year was not celebrated in the customary fashion. The meritorious prayers and rituals were intended to help and guide the deceased Tibetans for their safe and happy passage into their future re-births in accordance with the Tibetan Buddhist beliefs.

According to a reliable information received by the Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD), Kardze Court recently sentenced four nuns of Puru-na Nunnery, Su-ngog Township, Kardze County, Sichuan Province to varying prison terms.

The nuns were part of fifty nuns from Puru-na Nunnery in Kardze County which on 14 May 2008 staged a peaceful demonstration at Kardze County Headquarter against the illegal detentions and arrests of Tibetan people by the Chinese authorities.

Chinese authorities has recently conducted a series of court trials of Tibetans arrested and detained for their involvement in the pan Tibet protests in 2008 which swept across the areas inhabited by Tibetans in Tibet. A group of local Tibetans were severely beaten and then detained by the Chinese security forces for staging peaceful demonstrations in Kardze County, Kardze “Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture” (“TAP”), Sichuan, according to confirmed information received by the Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD)

On 21 June 2008, a Tibetan youth named Dragu of Khashul Village, Dado Township, Kardze County, Kardze “TAP”, was detained by the People’s Armed Police (PAP) as he had entered into the main market of the County calling for a free Tibet until his protest was overtaken by 7 local PAP officers. He was seen sporting a white band tied around his head with the words “Bod Rangzen” (Free Tibet) written on it and with Tibetan flags painted on both of his cheeks.

According to sources, this morning at around 11:00 AM (BST), a peaceful protest was staged by a few Tibetan residents of Kardze County, at one of the road intersections at the Kardze county main market square, raising Pro-Tibet slogans and distributing pamphlets calling for “the swift return of the Dalai Lama to Tibet”, “freedom in Tibet”, “release of those arrested in recent protests” and “China quit Tibet” etc.

The Chinese security forces severely beat and then arrested a nun of SamtenLing Nunnery in Drango County, Kardze “Tibet Autonomous Prefecture” (‘TAP’) Sichuan Province, following her act of defiance by staging a peaceful solo protest in Drango County, by raising pro-Tibet slogans and distributing pamphlets calling for ‘the swift return of the Dalai Lama to Tibet” and “freedom in Tibet”, according to confirmed information received from reliable sources by the Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD).

On 8 June 2008, at around 9:00 AM (Beijing Standard Time), Tsering Tsomo, 27 years old nun of SamtenLing Nunnery a.k.a Watak Nunnery, originally from Chakra Village, Drango County (Ch: Luhuo Xian) Kardze “Tibet Autonomous Prefecture” (‘TAP’) staged a peaceful solo protest in Drango County by raising Pro-Tibet slogans and distributing pamphlets calling for “swift return of the Dalai Lama to Tibet” and “freedom in Tibet” among the people. After a short stint of her solo protest, Tsering Tsomo was known to have been surrounded by the security forces and was severely beaten and tortured by pounding her with iron rods, kicked and punched her indiscriminately. The county PSB officials later took her away to the county Detention Centre for further questioning.

According to the latest information received by the TCHRD from a reliable source confirmed that three nuns of Dragkar Nunnery and a female student were arrested by the Kardze County Public Security Bureau (PSB) officials for staging a protest yesterday.
