China’s poverty alleviation programs impoverishing Tibetan nomads

Last month, Chinese authorities announced the acceleration of the ‘pairing assistance’ program as part its overall goal to end poverty in Ba (Ch: Tongde) County (also called Ba Dzong in common Tibetan parlance) in Tsolho (Ch: Hainan) Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province, in the Tibetan province of Amdo. The ‘pairing assistance’ program is a nation-wide initiative of dispatching party members and local cadres to gather information on rural residents and adopt preventative measures to combat sensitive political issues from gaining traction among the masses. China detains 10 former Tibetan nomads for protesting denial of welfare benefits

  Chinese security forces have detained at least 10 Tibetan residents of Chumey Village in Nyakla Township in Nangchen (Ch: Nangqian) County, Yulshul (Ch: Yushu) Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province, according to exile Tibetan sources. The arrests were made after Tibetans from the village staged a peaceful protest, calling for an equal distribution of welfare benefits provided by the government for Tibetan families. These government benefits, as the Nangchen County Economic Development Council announced recently, include projects to build new houses and provide scholarships to students in the village. China detains yet another Tibetan woman for peaceful solitary protest

A Tibetan nomad woman was detained incommunicado last week for staging peaceful protest in Meuruma town in Ngaba (Ch: Aba) County in Ngaba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province. Woekar Kyi, a 23-year-old mother of one, staged a solo protest at about 3 pm on 15 August 2015, shouting slogans calling on the Chinese government to grant freedom to Tibet and allow Dalai Lama to return home.
