China sentences four Tibetan monks to long prison terms

Four monks from Gyalrong Tsodun Monastery have been sentenced to long prison terms by the Barkham Intermediate People’s Court in Barkham (Ch: Ma’erkang), capital of Ngaba (Ch: Aba) Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province.

According to reliable information received by TCHRD, Namsey, 18, was sentenced to 10 years while Yarphel, 18, was handed six years’ imprisonment. Two other Tsodun monks, Lobsang Sangay, 19, and Asong, 22, were sentenced to two years, and two years and six months respectively. The sentences were passed in the middle of this month.

Senior monk sentenced to 7 years for sharing information

A senior Tibetan monk who went missing for eight months since his arbitrary arrest last October has been sentenced to seven years in prison for ‘sharing pictures of nun Tenzin Wangmo and information related to her self-immolation protest with outsider’ by an Intermediate People’s Court in Ngaba (Ch: Aba) Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province.

The sentence was passed on 18 June 2012 by an Intermediate People’s Court in Ngaba Prefecture.

The charges leveled against Yonten Gyatso, 37, a monk who had held various official posts at his Khashi Monastery in Ngaba County also included “sharing information since 2008 about political events in Tibet by attempting to make telephone calls to human rights mechanisms of the UN”, a source tells TCHRD.

Tibetan sentenced to four years, another to two years

Two Tibetans were sentenced to four years and two years’ prison terms on unknown dates in connection with protests that occurred in January 2012 in Ngaba (Chinese: Aba) County in Ngaba Tibetan and QiangAutonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province.

Logya, 33, a layman from Meruma township in Ngaba was sentenced tofour years in prison for carrying a portrait of the Dalai Lama and leading a protest march on 23 January 2012 in Ngaba, a reliable source told TCHRD.

After participating in the protests that swept a large part ofTibetan areas in Sichuan Province on 23 January 2012, Logya alongwith 24-yr-old Choepa managed to evade arrest in the hands of Chinesesecurity officers for sometime. Logya was soon arrested at Mematownship in Machu County, Kanlho (Chinese: Gannan) TibetanAutonomousPrefecture, Gansu Province.

Detentions reported after Lhasa immolations

An unspecified number of Tibetans have been detained following the twin self-immolation protests in the Tibetan capital, Lhasa.

Two Tibetan men, both believed to be young, staged a joint self-immolation protest near Jhokhang Temple at Barkhor (Chinese: Parkor) Street in Lhasa. Dorjee Tsetan died while Dhargye is hospitalized with burn injuries.

Chukey, the owner of the restaurant where Dhargye used to work as a cashier, was arrested along with his wife and family, according to sources. Our sources also identified some of the detained Tibetans as Dolma Kyab, Nyurgyog, Khambey, Tamdrin Kyab and Sangdrak; all of them belong to Ngaba Prefecture.

Two More Kirti Monks Arrested

Chinese police have arrested two more monks; identified as Gyatso and Lobsang Gendun, from the Kirti monastery in Ngaba, Sichuan Province.

Sources reported that on 21 November 2011, monk Gyatso was arrested and taken from his room by authorities. Gyatso, age around 42, is from the Ragtsa family in Mesip Village in Ngaba County. He was ordained as a monk at a young age. He was a teacher of the monastery’s school before the school’s closure. Many of his compositions have appeared in regional newspapers and magazines.

Lobsang Gendun, age 48, a former disciplinarian of the Kalachakra college at Kirti, was arrested and detained in mid October. He belongs to the Sego family in Kanyag Village, Trotsik Township.

Three Tibetan monks sentenced to ‘Re-education Through Labour’, China tries to dissuade Kirti monks with money

Around 10 September 2011, three Kirti monks were sentenced to 2- 3 years’ of ‘Re-education Through Labour’ by the Ngaba (Ch: Aba) Prefecture Public Security Bureau (PSB). The three monks: Lobsang Dhargye, Tsekho and Dorjee were all arrested around 12 April 2011 on suspicion related to the 16 March 2011 self immolation of monk Phuntsog.

According to our sources, Dorjee, 16, from Lhoengtsang Village, Ngaba County, has been sentenced to three years re-education through labor.

Tsekho is 30 years old, born in Tru-tse Township, Ngaba County and 22 years old Lobsang Dhargye is from Myeruma, Ngaba County. Both Tsekho and Lobsang Dhargye have been sentenced to re-education through labor for two years and six months.

Tibetan monk sentenced to 11 yrs term in immolation case

A Ngaba (Ch: Aba) Prefecture Court today sentenced Tsundue (Ch: Drungdru), a Tibetan monk, to 11 years imprisonment term charging him of ‘intentional homicide’ for hiding Phuntsog and preventing him from getting medical treatment after he set himself on fire, State news agency Xinhua reported on 29 August 2011.

On 28 August the same State news agency (Xinhua) said that three Tibetan monks charged with ‘intentional homicide’ for the immolation of Phuntsog will be tried on 29th and 30th of August. The other two monks are to be sentenced tomorrow.

Another Kirti monk sentenced to 3 Years; hundreds of Chinese officials deployed in Kirti

According to confirmed information, monk Dhonyoe Dorjee of the Ngaba Kirti Monastery was sentenced to a three years imprisonment term. At present, he is in a prison in Mein-Yang, near Chengdu, Sichuan. There is no information on the details of his trail, the court that sentenced him, and the date and time of the court hearing. The charges under which he has been sentenced also remain not known.

Since his arrest on 8 April 2011 from his monastery, Dhonyoe Dorjee was held incommunicado until his trial.

Son of Pelkho (father), Dhonyoe Dorjee (34) belongs to the Rawe Pelkho family, Cha Township in Ngaba County. He was ordained at a very young age at the Kirti Monastery in Ngaba.

China arrests Tibetan writer in Ngaba

A Tibetan monk from Ngaba Gomang Monastery was arrested in the beginning of this month for alleged anti government writings, according to information received by the Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD).

Dokru Tsultrim, a Tibetan monk who recently wrote two articles critical of the Chinese government was picked up by the Chinese security forces from his room at Ngaba Gomang Monastery.

Dokru was accused of writing two articles that criticized the Chinese government and supported the “separatist forces of the Dalai Lama,” according to the source.

Tibetan man blinded and sentenced to four years’ in jail in Ngaba

The Intermediate People’s Court of Ngaba County in Sichuan province sentenced a Tibetan to four years’ jail term for spearheading protests in Ngaba County last year, according to confirmed information received by the Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD) from reliable sources.

A 33-year-old, Choephel of Urjamtsang family, Unit No. 2, Meruma Township, Ngaba County, Ngaba “Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture”(‘TAP’) Sichuan Province, who was involved in March 15, 16 and 17 protests in Ngaba County last year was sentenced to four years’ jail term by the Ngaba County Intermediate People’s Court on 4 November 2008. The court’s original sentence of ten years’ jail term to Choephel was later commuted to four years’ term on the ground of his clean past record, according to the source. The Intermediate People’s Court of Ngaba County convicted Choephel on alleged crimes of leading protest, looting and ransacking County Public Security Bureau (PSB) office and burning national flag in a series of protests that took place in Ngaba County last spring.
