Tibetan master tailor dies in self-immolation, body seized by police

Shichung, a master tailor and father of three became the 121st Tibetan to die of self-immolation protest in Tibet.

A Tibetan man known for his master tailoring skills has died of self-immolation protest in front of his home in Thawa Village in Gomang Township in Ngaba (Ch: Aba) County in Ngaba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province. The total number of self-immolation protests inside Tibet has now reached 121.

According to information received by TCHRD, Shichung, 41, set himself on fire at around 4 pm (local time) on 28 September 2013 to protest against China’s repressive policies in Tibet. At the time, local Tibetans were participating in a prayer ceremony conducted every year in the village.

Shichung conducted his self-immolation protest in front of the gate of his house, which lies close to the highway that connects Ngaba to Golog (Ch: Guoluo) in neighboring Qinghai Province. Eyewitnesses said that on the day of the prayer ceremony, sometime in the afternoon, Shichung left the prayer ceremony and headed toward his home. There, at his house, he lighted a butter lamp in front of a portrait of the Dalai Lama. Moments later, he was seen engulfed in flames outside his house. He walked forward around forty steps and died.

China sentences eight Tibetans to varying prison terms in Tibet

According to a confirmed information received by the Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD), a Chinese court on 13 August 2009 in Golog “Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture” (“TAP”) sentenced eight Tibetans to varying prison sentences.

The People’s Court of Machen County, Golog “TAP”, Qinghai Province sentenced six monks and two lay Tibetans to varying prison terms for taking part in a peaceful protest on 21 March 2009.

Arbitrary detention intensified for exile Tibetan returnees

According to confirmed information received by the Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy,(TCHRD). Chinese authorities in Tibet have arbitrarily detained and slapped heavy fine on Tibetan returnees from exile in India without any formal political charges. As in the past many young and minor Tibetans brave various obstacles to seek freedom of religious practice in monasteries or to join educational institutions set up by Tibetan exile government in India with impending objective of returning to Tibet.

Gedun Tsundue, a monk of “Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture,”(TAP) Qinghai Province, escaped into exile and joined Kirti monastery based in Dharamsala and Jamphel Gyatso, a monk of Jadel Khangtsen of Sera Jhe Monastery in South India returned to Tibet after completing their studies in February 2004. According to confirmed information received by the Center, both were reported to be arbitrarily detained for four months before being handed over to the concerned Chinese authorities in Golog Region and fined 4,500 Yuan each.

Death of a Tibetan prisoner of conscience due to torture

According to reliable information received from Tibet, Lobsang Dhargyal suddenly died Monday morning on 19 November 2002 in a Manufacturing Unit for Hydro-Electricity Power Plant, a “reform through labour” camp located in Siling Village, Machen County (Ch:Maqin xian), Golog “Tibet Autonomous Prefecture”, Qinghai Province. He was serving almost 19 years’ prison term including his earlier two and a half years’ imprisonment.

Although TCHRD is yet to receive detail information, it is almost certain that Lobsang Dhargyal’s sudden demise is due to torture and maltreatment in the forced labour camp. He is believed to have suffered brain haemorrhage at the time of death. More updates on his death shall follow upon receiving further information.
