Workshop for Tibetan Journalists
22 November 2021 - 24 November 2021

TCHRD in conjunction with the Association of Tibetan Journalists (ATJ) organized a three-day workshop on journalism from 22 to 24 November 2021 in Dharamshala, India.
Around 30 participants including reporters and editors from Phayul, Tibet Times, Voice of Tibet, Voice of America, Radio Free Asia, Tibet.net, Tibet Express and Tibet Post International took part in the workshop.
The workshop sessions were led by Mr Amitava Sanyal, editor, Chevening Scholar and award-winning journalist Ms Shoma Chaudhury. The workshop was divided into two sections – ‘Fundamentals of Journalism’ and ‘Investigative Journalism’. Within the two, topics such as ‘Post-Truth Journalism,’ ‘Ethics of Investigative Journalism,’ ‘Truth-telling, Repression and Democracy’, and ‘People, Power and Public Interest’ were covered.
The three-day workshop touched upon the unique challenges faced by Tibetan journalists in representing the community vs. reporting the community, striking a balance between public interest and privacy and the global phenomenon of polarization. The workshop provided a platform for open discussion on the prospect and barriers present in the strict application of common journalistic principles in the exile Tibetan media landscape.
