The Chinese authorities have demoted six officials of Tibetan descent from their high-ranking posts in Toelung Dechen (Chinese: Duiling Deqing) County in Lhasa Municipality, Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR).

Dawa Tsering, the Vice-Party Secretary of Tolung Dechen County; Passang, the Vice-Head tof he County Religious Affairs Bureau and Nyima Wangdue, the head of the County Religious Affairs Bureau and three other Tibetan officials were demoted from their posts, reported the Chinese government-owned Xizangradio.com on 17 May 2012.

The decision to demote the officials was taken by the Lhasa City branch of Communist Party of China (CPC) which held a meeting to discuss the demotion. The reason for their demotion was their failure to strictly undertake their duties and responsibilities in maintaining stability.

A Tibetan man died of emotional shock after security officers arbitrarily arrested his son at Tretroh village in Dopay Township in Ngamring County of Shigatse (Chinese: Xigaze) Prefecture in Tibet Autonomous Region.

According to information received by TCHRD, Tsetan Tashi, in his 60s, died of shock after security officers arrested his 30-year-old son, Tsewang Norbu, who was a monk at Ngamring Riwoche Monastery in Ngamring County.

The Ngamring County Public Security Bureau (PSB) officers arrested Tsewang Norbu for writing Tibetan independence slogans, according to sources.

The Chinese authorities in Kardze (Chinese: Ganzi) Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan Province have issued a notification aimed at restricting the activities of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Kardze Prefecture.

The notification issued on 26 April 2012 requires all non-governmental ‘social organizations’ to register with the prefectural-level Bureau of Civil Affairs failing which these organizations will be declared illegal, reported the Chinese government-owned Ganzi Daily News on 27 April 2012.

The Chinese government has conferred awards on ‘harmonious’ monasteries and ‘patriotic’ monks and nuns at a ceremony held on 19 April 2012 in Lhasa, Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR).

Reporting on the award ceremony presided over by TAR Party Secretary Chen Quanguo, the Chinese government-owned website, ChinaTibetnews.com said the recipients of the first award ceremony for the harmonious model monasteries and law-abiding, patriotic and advanced monks include 59 monasteries and nunneries, 58 Monastery Management Committees (MMCs), 6,773 monks and nuns, and 200 ‘outstanding cadres’ posted in monasteries in recognition of their good work.

The report said the ‘law-abiding advanced monks and nuns’ of the Harmonious Model Monasteries shall be awarded with government subsidies. These subsidies include free pension, medical insurance and an annual free health check up.

The government authorities in Kardze (Chinese: Ganzi) County have forcibly closed a locally-founded Tibetan school that has offered classes in Tibetan language and culture for the last 20 years at Khadrok village in Rongpo Tsa Lema Township in Kardze County, Kardze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province.

Sources told TCHRD that the Khadrok Jamtse Rokten School was closed on 2 April 2012 and the Kardze County Public Security Bureau officers arrested the school’s director, Nyendak and a teacher, Yama Tsering.

About 100 Tibetans were injured after they were beaten by security personnel from People’s Armed Police (PAP) for protesting against the local government’s move to reward and honor two corrupt officials in Adhue village in the upper part of Ngaba (Chinese: Aba) County in Ngaba and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan Province.

The incident occurred at around 2 pm on 14 April 2012 in which some Tibetans like Lopon Kyab were seriously injured and had to be hospitalized in the Ngaba County hospital.
