On the 25th anniversary of the enforced disappearance of the 11th Panchen Lama Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, the Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD) reiterates its call for his immediate and unconditional release and unfettered access to independent international human rights group to ascertain his fate and wellbeing.

Gedhun Choekyi Nyima was six years old when he and his parents became victims of enforced disappearance at the hands of Chinese authorities on 17 May 1995, three days after His Holiness the Dalai Lama had recognised him as the reincarnation of the previous 10th Panchen Lama.

Chinese authorities announced the return of Chinese cadres and migrant workers to resume work at the Jiacha Hydropower Station that was put into operation during the 13th Five-Year Plan” (2016-2020) period. Located in Gyatsa County in Lhoka (Ch: Shannan) City, Tibet Autonomous Region, the Jiacha is one of the three hydro dams on the Yarlung Tsangpo including Dagu and Jiexu, which China’s State Council announced in 2013 as part of its new Energy Development Plan.

The Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD) is deeply concerned over the enforced disappearance of Tibetan businessman Tenzin Choephel, who was known for environmental and cultural advocacy work in Tachen Township, Nagchu (Ch: Naqu) County, Nagchu Prefecture, Tibet Autonomous Region, in the Tibetan province of Kham.

Choephel has not been heard or seen since his detention by Chinese police in March 2018 from Gongkar Airport in Lhasa. He had just returned from a trip to Chengdu city. After taking him to a detention centre in Lhasa city, police searched his house and allegedly found some photos of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and “several political literature”.

A former Tibetan political prisoner, who had been released last year after completing a four-year prison term, died yesterday at his home because local authorities barred him from seeking timely and proper medical care.

Choekyi, 43, died at around 3.35 pm local time on 7 May in Shosang village, Nyitod Township, Serthar (Ch: Seda) County, Kardze (Ch: Ganzi) Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province. He was a monk at Phugu Monastery.

The Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD) expresses grave concerns over the uncertainty surrounding the appeal case of imprisoned Tibetan community activist A-nya Sengdra and his associates, and calls on the Chinese authorities to release them immediately without conditions.

Mr Sengdra, a popular community leader was sentenced to seven years and his associates to varying prison terms on the trumped-up charges of “picking quarrels and provoking trouble” and “gathering a crowd to disturb public order” last December in Gade (Ch: Gande) County, Golok (Ch: Guoluo) Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province, in the Tibetan province of Amdo.

The Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD) condemns the latest attempt by Chinese authorities to block imprisoned Tibetan language advocate Tashi Wangchuk’s appeal against his five-year prison term by giving the excuse of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Tashi Wangchuk had been sentenced to five years in prison on the trumped-up charge of “inciting separatism” in May 2018 by the Yushu Intermediate People’s Court in Qinghai Province following which he decided to appeal the sentence through his lawyers Lin Qilei and Liang Xiaojun.

The Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD) demands the immediate release of Dorje Tashi, a Tibetan private entrepreneur currently serving life imprisonment and held in detention since 10 July 2008 in Chushur Prison near Lhasa city, Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR), in the Tibetan province of U-Tsang.

The Lhasa Intermediate People’s Court had sentenced Dorje Tashi to life imprisonment on 26 June 2010 for allegedly committing “loan fraud”. A decade later, his case is being appealed for the second time on the ground that the verdict itself was wrong and unfair.
